Important Web Sites

We are making numerous changes on the website Finley River Chief. Also almost everyday a new bit of information is added to our forum website. The Foundation Of The Breed.

We have many plans for the coming year to be able to provide the history of this great Treeing Walker Breed for anyone that has an interest in it.

FINLEY RIVER CHIEF (The Beginning)

It was spring of 1957 that Mr. Glen Bixler of Corning, Iowa loaded up his good female, Bixler's Supreme Sally. He was on his way to Sugar Creek, Ohio to visit Mr. John Shetler. Glen had heard of the mighty powerful hound, Shetler's Sonny Boy and was going to mate Sally to him.

I am sure Mr. Bixler had it well in his mind to get some very nice pups, but I doubt if he had any idea that he would get a pup that would someday surpass all stud dog achievements and set records incomparable.

It was a short time after the mating that the news spread swiftly. Mr. Herb Carsten of Springfield, Missouri traveled to Iowa and brought one of the pups home in a shoe box at 5 weeks of age for a fee of $35.00. That was a fair price for a pup in those days.

Little did Herb or Glen know that that someday he would be worth 100 times that much. The name was Corn Belt Chief only to be changed to Finley River Chief. Chief developed into a tremendous coon dog and although he was never heavy advertised as a stud several consciencious hunters mated their females to him.

In 1964 Chief was sold to Mr. John Guilford of Onsted, Michigan for $1000.00.

In October 1965 Mr. John J. Monroe won the 1965 ACHA World Hunt with a direct son of Chief, Finley River Spot which Mr. Monroe felt was one of the greatest coon dogs to ever live.

In November of 1965 John Monroe bought Chief from Mr. Guilford for $3000.00 at the age of 8 years. He knew what Chief had to offer to the breed and from the looks of things so did several others.

John J. Monroe owned Finley River Chief almost 7 years to the date. He was 15 1/2 years of age at the time of his death.
